The little town of Haverfordwest – Pembrokeshire is a fascinating and quaint way to get to know Wales. The town of around 14,000 people lies on the River Cleddau and it is overlooked by a medieval castle. This area of Wales is famous for being the area where St Patrick left for Ireland to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity.

Haverfordwest is dominated by the 12th century medieval castle, which was first built by Gilbert de Clare Earl of Pembroke. The castle is in ruins, but it has a fascinating history and was visited by King Rochard II and Oliver Cromwell. As well as the castle, there is a museum and the ruins of an Augustinian Priory alongside the river. Visiting the abbey is another indication of the town’s vast history.

Right near Haverfordwest there is the Graham Sutherland Gallery, which is housed in Picton Castle. The gallery is filled with landscapes and other paintings by the artist. The castle is an Edwardian fortress and features gorgeous gardens with many of the plants having been transplanted from Scotland’s famous Lochinch Gardens.

In the summer months Haverfordwest springs into life with tourists who come to enjoy the beautiful coastline and the national park. Haverfordwest has 186 miles of coastline, which attracts hikers and walkers who come to take in the natural beauty of the hilly area and impressive cliffs. The county has organized several guided walks for visitors to take them on some of the best known walking routes in the area.

Haverfordwest is a little market town and it has an award winning farmer’s market, which is great for browsing among fresh and gourmet produce. Throughout the town there are a number or wonderful restaurants and cafes. There are also some great pubs and inns for a pint or two. Accommodation is available in the form of some quaint B&Bs.

Nearby the town is St David’s Cathedral, which was originally the site of a 6th century monastery that was established by Wales’ patron saint, David. It has been has been a site of pilgrimage for hundreds of years. The cathedral is just a few miles from the town and is easily accessible for a short trip.

There is plenty to do in Haverfordwest – Pembrokeshire. The area is rich in natural beauty and steeped in Welsh history. It makes a charming area to escape the masses for a few days break when you need your spirits restored.
